Segregation in Manhattan: Huge Gap Between North and South

The median household income in the United States is $55,775, according to the United States Census Bureau (2015). The following report is focused on Manhattan and its Community Districts, in order to find out which ones exceed the average household income and which ones are below.

The Manhattan borough is the most densely populated in New York City and it’s the economic and administrative center of the city. With more than 1,586,000 inhabitants and 12 Community Districts, the wealthiest area of the borough is mainly located in Midtwon and Downtown, while Harlem is the area with more families that do not reach the median household income of the country.

Community Districts 1 & 2 – Battery Park City have the highest yearly household income, with an average of $201,569 of family earnings. Besides, both Districts 1 & 2 are the ones with less households under $50,000 of revenue every year. In contrast to that, Community District 11 – East Harlem PUMA is the area of Manhattan with the lowest average regarding family revenue. Households in East Harlem earn around $58,110 every year in average, still better than the nation median. However, almost a 66% of the family units do not manage to make more than $50,000 a year.

Studying Abroad in the U.S.: A Challenging Experience Worth Taking

A considerable number of international students touch down in New York every year, with a lot of goals and dreams to accomplish

The United States is a very appealing destination for students willing to spend one year of their degree pursuit abroad. Since the mid -20th century it has been a top destination hosting international students. The education system and its welcoming culture are two of the country’s main attention-grabbers.

According to figures of the Institute of International Education available on its Open Doors Data, the international student population in the U.S. has grown, in contrast to what has happened worldwide. Last academic year -2015/16- more than one million international students were enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities.

Within the United States, New York is also a leading state attracting international students. It is the second choice among students from overseas, just behind California, which is the main choice. Apart from helping increase diversity, exchange students also cause an economic impact in the country. In the 2015-16 academic year, international students studying at U.S. colleges and universities contributed $32.8 billion and supported more than 400,000 jobs to the U.S. economy, according to International Student Economic Value Tool (NAFSA).

Even though the University of New York is the foremost institution welcoming international students nationwide, CUNY Colleges are a perfect example of the great variety of races and ethnicities we can find in the New York. And so is Brooklyn College. Every year -and every semester- not only international students, but also transfer students from all over the world enroll for the CUNY College in Brooklyn. The following story, though, is focused on international students, those who come to New York temporarily for a semester or a year abroad, and then they transfer the credits back to their home university.

International students enter the United States usually with a J-1 status, which is meant for exchange program participants sponsored by the college where they are enrolled. But the process is nothing but simple for them to be eligible to become exchange visitors in the U.S.. Before they get accepted, they have to fill out an application form, a resume and a cover letter and send it to the Office of International Student and Scholar Services. In addition, they have to show some kind of proof of their English level, usually taking a TOEFL or IELTS exam.

But there is still more. They also have to deal with the United States embassy in their country in order to get the visa, which requires both an online application and a face-to-face interview at the embassy. If the requirements are met, which usually are, they are all set for their exciting experience overseas. The Form DS-2019 is the certificate of eligibility for exchange visitors, which is issued and signed by the sponsor, and will become one of the most valuable assets of international students while they are in the U.S., as well as their passport. If they happen to lose any of these documents, they might get in trouble.

Brooklyn College stands out for its awesome Campus

Making the decision of taking a semester or an academic year abroad is extremely challenging. Students have a lot of things to take into consideration, especially when the destination is the United States and, what is more, New York City. Money is one of the main concerns. The vast majority of international students pay for tuition at college, and tuition in America is far more expensive than their tuition fees back in their country. Apart from that, housing, which is also a major concern, and expenses on a regular basis such as grocery or public transportation are also things to take into account.

In addition, because of their status and sponsor, Homeland Security do not allow them to get a social security number. Since they are sponsored by a college, and the main purpose of a college is study, they are not eligible for a temporary social security number, unless they find an internship directly related to their field of study. Besides, they are also allowed to work on-campus, but the resources they get from Brooklyn College in that sense are almost nonexistent. However, the common situation is that they do not count on any type of income in the meantime they are in the U.S. Most of them, a 67% according to Institute of International Education, depend on their parents to pay for all their outlays.

The story intends to picture how international students felt when first came to New York, in terms of their cultural assimilation, integration into American society and Campus, resources to find a space to live and other problems they might went through during their adaptation. Besides, they also talk about how has their experience played out so far and the excitement it entails living in New York City, one of the most fascinating and multicultural cities in the world. Every single character involved in the process has a voice in this story.

Billy Yousefi (21), from Düsseldorf (Germany) is majoring in business and he is an exchange student at college just for the first semester. He loves everything about New York, but especially the parks, the clubs and the food. He is also very keen on the Brooklyn College Campus and its clubs. Camilla Øren (21) is originally from Norway but she was already familiarized with studying abroad, since she is pursuing a film major in Edinburg (Scotland). Camilla is particularly interested in screenwriting and she is also leaving the U.S. by the end of the Fall Semester. What she really likes about the city is Central Park, Times Square and Brooklyn. Besides, she is fond of her one-screen writing class. The third character is Mélissa Chareyron (19), from Paris (France). She is taking a double-degree in business and management and unlike the others, she is staying both semesters in New York. The energy is what she mainly stands out from the city, as well as having had the chance to meeting all the international people and how the college system works here in the U.S..

Apart from international students, we will also hear from the director of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services at Brooklyn College, Keisha Wilson, the person in charge of every single international student. Besides, the president of the International Students Club, Brian Ramdin, who just launched the Club this Fall Semester 2016, also talks about how exchange students deal with problems and what is the current situation of the club.

What The New York Times Video Site Offers Millennials

The New York Times is a ground-breaking newspaper not only in the United States, but also all over the world. But the word “newspaper” is no longer appropriate to describe the type of journalism that The Times stands for. The journalism shift to digital world has changed the way media organizations produce the content. When newspapers first launched their websites they simply reposted the same stories and formats they were doing in print. However, news outlets online need to craft their stories in an appealing manner for the audience.Viewers in this day and age are fed up of reading. They look for visual and immersive content, video, images and stunning interactive infographics.

Today, The New York Times Company describes himself as “a global media organization dedicated to enhancing society by creating, collecting and distributing high-quality news and information”. Although the company is still preserving its excellence in journalism, The New York Times is focusing more and more on cutting-edge technologies like 360º video and virtual reality. Thus, video storytelling is now a staple. Captura de pantalla 2016-12-06 a les 19.17.20.pngThis is how The Times Video site looks like / The New York Times

The globally known daily newspaper took a chance on video some years ago, and nowadays video is basic for a news organization with presence on the Internet. While newsroom jobs are going down, investments are shifting to the video team. The New York Times operates in every single platform where people looking for news would like to see videos rather than text: YouTube, social media such as Facebook or Instagram or the smartphone app. Videos used to be the best partners to print stories, but they are not anymore. Now videos are the attention-grabber, while text is second.

The New York Times has two different sites where it updates video. Times Video is where the news outlet places all the footage. In every channel we can find videos related to different topics, such as U.S. & Politics, International, New York or even documentaries. The clips normally range from 1 to 3 minutes, which is a very appropriate time for the web.

But the concept of “video” is currently going one step further, with the advent of 360º video and virtual reality (VR). And The Times is going all in with it. Last November, it unveiled The Daily 360 in a partnership with Samsung, where it puts up 360º videos. But The New York Times actually began its push to VR last year when it rolled out its NYT VR app and gave away a million Google Cardboard goggles to Sunday print subscribers.

This is the first video that The Times posted to The Daily 360

360º videos offer an immersive experience to the viewers. They make them feel they are on location experiencing the event themselves. They can look to any side and see what is going on around them. Using the goggles, the adventure becomes even more exciting and realistic.

Social media is also a very important environment for media, because the number of Internet users looking for news on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter is pumping up. The new York Times Times is taking advantage of the new features that both Facebook and Instagram have incorporated, clearly backing up Facebook Live and Instagram Stories to engage with a wider audience. 360-degree videos are also streamed live from The New York Times Facebook Page. Videos on Facebook posted by media outlets usually include some text that backs up the footage.
